IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE BOOT SECTOR WAS CORRUPTED BY AN UPDATE BEING PERFORMED TO ADOBE ACROBAT. THE COMPUTER, DELL INSPIRON 8600, WOULD NOT RESTART AFTER THE UPDATE WAS INSTALLED. THERE WAS NO PRIOR HISTORY OF HARD DISK PROBLEMS. THERE WAS NO NOISE.

Not ready reading drive C: MK6026GAX, error message

Windows booted and was functioning with spinning, scraping noises. Put laptop on the floor- off my lap - and it quieted down for a minute- then began.
