Drive is failed in OS. I was using my external and had shut it off because I did not need it at the time. When I turned it back on, my computer system (Windows XP) wouldn't read it and my password screen didn't come up.

What failure occurred? - drive not recognized by BIOS. Recovery attempts - Controller board swapped out.
