Only software recovery was attempted. The drive is producing CLICKING sound; NOT visible in BIOS; failed in OS

Toshiba MK6021GAS 60 GB laptop

-Laptop was left on overnight
-Tried to turn it off but didn’t so needed to be shut down manually
-Once shut down and restarted, weird noises occurred and Windows started booting up but stopped
-Taken to private computer shop to be looked at and see if data could be recovered
-Was told needed to replace hard drive and recovery not possible
-Nothing was done by me to attempt to recover data; comp. store may have
