Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3750330AS 750 Gb SATA
Computer crashed while I was using web browser, then computer would not reboot. It hung up on an error message saying that some file in Windows was missing. Could not get restarted. Took computer to CompUSA. They tried to save my data, but could not, I had them installed the new hard drive and given me the old one back.
Thanks, everything looks good and in place

Drive is failed in OS. The drive made a quick spin sound then didn't appear on the desktop. My computer can see it in disk utilities but can not mount it.

Data recovered and delivered on DVD's.
The web browser was sluggish, so I decided to reboot. It would not reboot. It gave me a blue screen - unmountable drive error every time. It wouldn't even boot in safe mode. I spoke to the IS guy and he told me to go to system recovery and run fixmbr and fixboot. After that, I never even saw the blue screen any more. We attempted to retrieve data by connecting it to a different computer, but we were unsuccessful.
I received my disks, looks I got all of my data back!!! Fantastic job!

As for the problem, the laptop was running fine and I was using a browser (possibly after the unit just came back up from a sleep mode -- I'm not sure). The system froze and I was unable to get a reset with Esc or Ctrl-Alt-Del, so I held the power button down for several seconds to reset. The system powered down and I left it off for 10-15 seconds. I restarted, got the Toshiba screen, and then the black screen appeared with the following error: "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart." I have done that repeatedly with the same result each time.
I took the unit to a local shop and the tech said he couldn't help (though he had been able to before on a partition issue) and that I needed an upper-tier type facility with a clean room. The drive has original parts. The only software recovery would've been by that technician.
